Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that provides financial support to men and women in the construction industry who have life-altering injuries. Each year the Foundation honors multiple recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was delighted to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a severe stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the ability to use his left arm and the experience left his left leg severely impaired, resulting in foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors were concerned that he would ultimately end up restricted to a wheelchair.

Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, putting financial tension on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help a person with Adil’s condition walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they would not be able to afford the apparatus in addition to the intensive rehab that would be needed so he could understand how to use it.

Fortunately, an employee at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the wonderful grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
